Jack Vettriano in Trieste

NO LAST-MINUTE STRESS!

TICKETS ARE ALWAYS AVAILABLE DIRECTLY AT THE SALONE DEGLI INCANTI TICKET OFFICE.

Following the incredible success of the first three stops in Bologna, Milan and Rome, which attracted over 80,000 visitors, the extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Jack Vettriano now arrives in Trieste. The exhibition celebrates the artistic legacy of Jack Vettriano (Fife, November 17, 1951 – Nice, March 1, 2025), one of the most beloved and widely acclaimed painters among Italian and international audiences.

From October 29, 2026, to May 2, 2027, the evocative setting of the Salone degli Incanti, located at Riva Nazario Sauro 1, will host an extensive selection of works tracing the life and remarkable career of the recently deceased painter.

Visitors will have the opportunity to discover more about one of the most commercially successful and widely reproduced artists of all time through an exhibition featuring over eighty works: eight oil paintings; a selection of unique-edition works on museum-quality paper, created specifically for the exhibition; a video feature dedicated to the artist; and striking photographs taken inside Jack Vettriano’s studio by Francesco Guidicini, the renowned Sunday Times portrait photographer, whose works are held in the collection of London’s National Portrait Gallery.

The exhibition is organised by Chiara Campagnoli, Deborah Petroni and Rubens Fogacci of Pallavicini S.r.l., and has been made possible through the collaboration and joint promotional efforts of the Municipality of Trieste. As with previous editions, the project benefits from a key partnership with Jack Vettriano Publishing, which continues to support the Italian tour. Media presentations are entrusted to Dr Pietro Franca, while the curatorial texts are written by Dr Francesca Bogliolo.

  • Press Release

The story of Jack Vettriano, born Jack Hoggan, seems to have emerged from the pages of a Victorian novel: a tale of humble beginnings, the late discovery of talent, and international acclaim. Born in the county of Fife, on Scotland’s North Sea coast, into a family connected to the coal-mining industry, Vettriano began working at a very early age, starting at just ten years old to help support his family financially. At sixteen, he left school and began an apprenticeship as a mining engineer. His artistic calling emerged only later. At the age of twenty-one, after receiving a set of paintbrushes and watercolours as a birthday present, he began painting as a self-taught artist, embarking on a journey that would lead him to develop a personal and instantly recognisable artistic style. Almost fifteen years later, in 1988, his first major professional exhibition opportunity arrived: Vettriano presented his work at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. His debut proved an immediate success, with both paintings on display sold on the very first day of the exhibition. After moving to Edinburgh, he adopted the artistic name Vettriano, taken from his mother’s surname. She was the daughter of an Italian emigrant originally from the province of Frosinone. The name would go on to become renowned far beyond Scotland’s borders, associated with an artistic output that captivated a broad international audience. Vettriano’s career has been marked by a distinctive relationship with the critical establishment. While some sections of the art world and the press viewed his work with reservations, the public consistently recognised and embraced its expressive and narrative qualities. Populated by elegant figures, suspended atmospheres and cinematic imagery, his works often tell stories of seduction, desire, loneliness and mystery, creating a distinctive visual universe that has gained widespread popularity well beyond traditional exhibition circuits. The selection of works featured in the exhibition, with particular emphasis on those produced on museum-quality paper, aims to highlight the different facets of the artist’s expressive research and offer visitors an opportunity to explore his visual language in greater depth. This approach reflects the career of a painter whose work has prompted contrasting reactions from critics, yet has won a large and devoted following. Despite reservations expressed by some sections of the critical establishment and the press, Vettriano established himself through public appreciation, with audiences continuing over the years to support his work through the purchase and circulation of reproductions. The artist’s commercial success was also substantial in terms of reproduction rights. According to the British newspaper The Guardian, Vettriano reportedly earned approximately £500,000 a year in royalties from reproductions of his works. Among these, The Singing Butler, considered his most famous painting, became an iconic image, widely reproduced on greeting cards throughout the United Kingdom and achieving extraordinary circulation. Vettriano’s images have also found an audience in Italy and abroad, appearing on the covers of numerous literary publications. In 2004, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for services to the visual arts, marking a significant milestone in his professional career. Among the well-known figures and collectors who have owned or collected works by the Scottish painter are Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Tim Rice and Robbie Coltrane.
