Press Release
A journey through Italian and European paintingย The exhibition is organised intoย seven thematic sections, ranging from religious painting to portraiture, including allegorical and mythological subjects. Visitors to this itinerary will be able to admire works by masters such asย Giandomenico Tiepolo, Correggio, Bernardino Luini, Giampietrino, Moretto, Pompeo Batoni and Andrea Del Sarto, as well as a selection of paintings that testify to the popularity of Leonardo's models in the Po Valley and the influence of the Tuscan, Venetian and Flemish schools. ย The works, usually housed in the evocative Visconti Castle in Pavia, have been selected to illustrate the evolution of taste and artistic trends that swept through Lombardy and Italy between the Renaissance and Neoclassicism. The paintings on display, many of which are rarely seen outside Pavia, reflect the encyclopaedic nature of the collection commissioned by Marquisย Luigi Malaspina di Sannazzaro, an Enlightenment figure and patron of the arts, who founded the historical core of the Pinacoteca. ย ย Luigi Malaspina di Sannazzaro: a leading figure in Enlightenment collecting in the Po Valleyย Founder of the collection that now bears his name,ย Marquis Luigi Malaspina di Sannazzaroย (Pavia 1754โMilan 1835) was a central figure in Lombard culture and collecting during the Enlightenment. A man of profound erudition, he turned his palace in Pavia into a lively โStabilimento di Belle Artiโ (Fine Arts Establishment), which was inaugurated in 1838 as the city's first public museum. Malaspina was not only a collector: he was also an architect and designer of the new layout ofย Palazzo Malaspina, renovated between 1794 and 1835, and creator of theย Malaspina Gardens, part of his urban project open to the community even on public holidays. He published essays on the principles of beauty in architecture and painting and, in addition to paintings, collected a vast collection ofย glyptic impressions, intended for public use during his lifetime and now part of the minor arts sections of the Civic Museums of Pavia. ย ย A dialogue of gazes and visionsย Through a fascinating dialogue between faces โ portraits that capture the identity of the subjects โ andย visionsย โ sacred, allegorical and private devotional compositions โ the exhibition takes the public on a journey between introspection and spirituality, beauty and power, history and memory. ย ย Organisation and catalogueย The exhibition is accompanied by aย catalogueย published by Pallavicini srl, with critical texts by the curators and in-depth analyses dedicated to the individual sections.
